Prevention is better than abortion
Unwanted and unplanned pregnancy can cause unnecessary tension and fear. Sometimes when you don’t have sufficient information and you feel shy to discuss with your family, friends and even with your doctor, you become confused where to turn.
If you have had unprotected sex, you need not worry much as emergency contraceptive pills are now available. These pills can reduce your chance of getting pregnant. By taking emergency contraceptive pills in time, you don’t have to abort a life.
Two popular emergency contraceptive pills
Levonelle and ellaOne are among the 2 popular emergency contraceptive pills available to women who are looking for safe and effective contraceptive choices.. Many people call theses pills ‘morning after pills’, but it does not mean that you can take a pill only the next morning after sex. You can take a pill immediately after having unprotected sex. The earlier you take the emergency contraceptive pill, the better chance you have to prevent pregnancy.
How do emergency contraceptive pills work?
Levonelle and ellaOne work by releasing the hormone progesterone in women. Progesterone hormone is produced in large amount by the ovaries during pregnancy and the pill prevents a woman’s eggs from being fertilized or if they do become fertilised, the pill prevents the fertilised egg from being implanted in the womb.
Levonelle and ellaOne pills
Levonelle contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel and ellaOne contains the active ingredient ulipristal acetate. These pills can’t be taken on regular basis, they should only be taken in case of an emergency, when you have forgotten to take your regular contraceptive pills. If you use EC pills again and again they can prove to be dangerous.
You need to take Levonelle and ellaOne pills only on doctor’s prescription. The normal emergency contraceptive dose is one tablet. The Levonelle tablet can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. The ellaOne pill can be taken up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. Levonelle prevents about 95 out of 100 pregnancies, and ellaOne prevents about 98 out of 100 pregnancies. That is why we can say that ellaOne is more effective.
You should not take Levonelle and ellaOne pills if you are already pregnant.
